Class Initial Response to "Picture this" episode 1 Assignments Critiques My Critique Additional feedback
DR I like the premise of this show. I'm not really one for competition, but i think its more about what can you do in a given time period compared to everyone else, then an actual competition. I thought the assignments were good, it gives the photographer a chances to use different skills in each shot. I thought their approaches to the assignments were good, a few of them i thought could have done a better job. I wasn't a big fan of Carolyn's portrait of Aron, and even Aron's portrait of Carolyn. I agreed with the judges critiques. I thought they brought up some good points. I don't think that they were too harsh on any of the photographers, and gave them some useful tips to keep in mind for the next time. Im not completely sure who i think should win yet, but so far i like the work from Liz, Lucinda and Ed the most. I think one of them has the best shot at winning the competition. I agree with the judges decisions of who they eliminated first.
DR I thought the premise to the show was good, and that their sampling of photographers was diverse enough to have a good show. It was really interesting to see Martin Parr as a judge, because I don't think this show is anything he would be interested in. I also was unaware of the fact he's British. I liked their assignments, I thought there was a decent range of assignments, although they were all portrait assignments. I would have chosen a more candid style photograph for the "street" photograph. I thought all of their work for that assignment was too posed to be any type of documentary (except for the 3 teens on the beach). As I said, it was very interesting to see Martin Parr as a judge, and I thought they had a good selection of judges. The judging was well rounded in that they had a working photographer, a gallery owner, and a curator. This made for a very balanced critique and honest opinions from a few different angles. I think Lucinda and Jay were the best photographers of the bunch, with Ed also being talented. I was surprised to see Jay get the boot, as I thought his raw talent would carry him through. The technical side of photography is the part that can be learned, and he already has the eye for it. I also thought Aron was the worst photographer, not only missing ethics but having a very poor eye and technical ability. I think Carolyn and Aron were the first two who should have been eliminated, while Jay should have been given a chance. I thought this show was an enjoyable watch; a nice break from the documentaries we have been watching.
DR I really enjoyed this video. I like the concept of show in that it's not just one assignment to be judged on per episode you have a total of three photographs to prove yourself so if one doesn't turn out exactly the way you imagined you can still make it up. I also like that fact that it is not a trashy game show where people are rude and dramatic, it is solely based on the photography. I like that the photographers had to work with each other, strangers, and all the same person. These assignments were perfect for the first episode because they were all different enough to get a sense of each of the photographers' styles. It was important to be able to see each of their ideas in the making and how they formed ideas for each of the assignments. My favorite approach to an assignment was Lucinda's portrait of Jay. I like that she took a twist in putting him in own style to see herself through him. These assignments were similar to our first roll of film in class. It was sort of a "test run" and it worked to get their creative sides flowing. The judges clearly knew what they were talking about although I did think at times they were too harsh. Their criticism to Jay, I felt, was not very constructive. i felt his approaches were a form of his own style and they somewhat deteriorated his idea. The judges all had a similar input on all of the photographs and I feel like it would have been better if they had different feelings about each of the photographs. I do not think Jay should have been eliminated. I think Aron should have been eliminated for his photo on the seaside. It was an excellent concept but I feel that he should have made the photo work as a whole and not have to photoshop two together. I feel that Carolyn was the right choice to go home because her photos just were not as strong as the others and she put a lot of blame on other factors like the weather and time when everyone else had to shoot with the same conditions. I thought Jay had potential to win but since he is eliminated I think it could be a toss up between Lucinda, Ed and Lizz. I would like to see Lucinda win. I really enjoyed this video. It was a cool way to go about learning more photography styles and tactics.
DR I think it is an interesting idea for a show, and it is something i would like to see done in the United States. Also I would like to see them do maybe a little more, and not eliminate people so quickly. The photographers seem to be interesting, they are all very different in how they got to the point they were today but that is the hard part of the show. The judges and the mentor that they have seem like they are kind of harsh and that they all have different opinions of what they are looking for and hopefully together they can really get the best out of the photographers The assignments, while all being about people were all still very different. Each photographer had a slightly different approach, some worked and some didn't, also i think some could have worked better with more thinking behind them, there were good beginning ideas that just kinda fell apart. If I had to pick an assignment I think I would pick the first assignment. I feel that this is where I could be the most comfortable and be able to do my best. I would like to have more of an opportunity to talk to the person I was going to shoot and get to know them a little bit as well as get their feedback on the kinds of things that are important to them and that they would like in the photo. I think that that was really an opportunity for the photographers to show a side of the other that people maybe couldn't see on the surface or wouldn't think that was how they were. The judges critiques were well thought and for the most part I would say that I agreed with them. I don't know if it is fair that some pictures were photshopped and judged on the same level as those that weren't, to me it seems that pictures that weren't altered should have been worth more in a sense that i believe non tampered photos show more talent. I think Ed will win the show, if he can show the judges that he is willing to try new things and doesn't get stuck in his ways. I agree with the judges sending Carolyn home, but I would have liked to see more from Jay just to see where his photography could have taken him, however the judges reasoning for him not being able to be consistent by the end makes perfect sense to me.
DR I really liked the judges. They were very raw and honest. Their feedback seems fairly helpful for the contestants. I like some of the contestants. I like Ed and Lucinda the most. I agree with the judges choices of who was eliminated. Although Jay was a good photographer and I liked his pictures, especially of the two kids, their reasoning was definitely plausible. I thought the assignments were good choices especially for first assignments because the photographer really had to be forward and personal. It was good to make the assignment so that they had to get to know the subjects and possibly photograph in an uncomfortable condition such as weather or with approaching strangers. For the beach assignment I really liked Jay and Lucinda's photographs. I would have used a similar set up as Lucinda's for that shot. The judges really spoke what they thought. Their purpose isn't to shoot down someones work but to give them constructive criticism from a highly educated stand point. I agreed with all of their critiques. Carolyn really took her criticism too close to heart. I think, based on what I've seen so far, that Ed or Lucinda should win. Ed is probably my favorite so far. I like his style and approach. I do think the judges eliminated the right people especially Carolyn but I do think Jay definitely had a raw talent. I believe that Aron will be eliminated next.
DR Although I prefer collaborative work to competitive, I did enjoy the premise of the show (seeing as I am a product of my generation, and bred to be a reality tv addict). I liked seeing their assignments. For the portrait assignment, I think that some of the photographers focused too much on representing themselves and their stylistic conventions as artists, and not enough on the translation of their model's character. For the outdoor pier assignment, I think that more of the photographers could have taken advantage of the rain and worked with it, rather than attempting to work through it. I feel like they could have captured intensity in the sky and a very strong overall image if they had planned accordingly and used portable light sources. I feel that many of the judges contradicted themselves. Prior to assigning the portrait project to the contestants, they discussed how they would like to see simplicity and that excessive props and environments were not necessary. Upon critiques, their views seemed to change, claiming that some of the portraits were too plain. I personally really enjoyed seeing Lucinda's work. I like how much time she puts into each shot and her theatrical take on photography. I feel that she brought a very romanticized quality to each of her photographs with her use of lighting. I think that the judges made the right decision on which contestants they chose to eliminate from the competition. If three people had to have been eliminated, I would have liked to see Aron go. I appreciate artists who try to use their work as a tool for creating a statement or awareness, but I feel that Aron focuses too much on the statement and not enough on the art of the image.
DR I liked this video, I thought it was interesting to see photography in a competition setting, versus how we have seen it so far in this class. It was interesting to see how artistically each photographer chose to handle to the assignment. I liked the photographers they each seemed very different with their styles, education, background, etc. I liked the judges also, they seemed to fairly assess everyone, and I agreed with their comments. I thought that the assignments were a good choice for this competition. They allowed them to try out portraiture without choosing their subject, which can be a challenge. And they got to try out going out and finding people to photograph in the town which can also be difficult. For the first assignment where they had to photograph their partner I feel that none of the photographers really tried to portray their partner's personality that well. Most of them were caught up in their own ideas. I would've talked to my partner more, and then looked around the area for things that tie more into their personality. I thought it was interesting to see what the judges had to say about each person's work. Overall I agreed with what they were saying about each one. The work that didn't seem up to the challenge that they were harsh on I do feel deserved that criticism. I definitely agreed with their critique of Carolyn's work. I liked the candidate Liz the best of those on the show. I liked her take on the portraits she seemed to have a clear concept, which she saw through, and executed nicely in her print. Their choices for the elimination were also what I would have gone with. I thought Carolyn's work stood out as not as good as the others. She used photo shop to heavily edit her prints. I didn't think that was a good idea, she should have tried to find better lighting, etc when she was out photographing.
DR I really enjoyed this video. I thought that it was an interesting show and I liked listening to what the judges had to say. I thought that the different assignments that they had the people doing made it more interesting too and I really liked hearing the judges critique. I thought that the assignments were appropriate. I thought that not all of the photographers did all that they could to get the best photos of the people though. For example, Jay took a photo of a girl sitting on a chair in front of graffiti and it was so far away. I would've done this differently because emotion wasn't shown well in the photo at all. Also, I would've tried to pick more interesting subject matter when out on the street photographing strangers. I thought that the judges critiques were pretty good for most part. Some of the things they said I didn't agree with though. For example, I kinda liked the picture of the four people standing on the beach, I thought it was pretty cool after she photoshopped it. But, i did tend to agree with the judges on most of the things they said. Other than that though, I thought the judges were pretty much right on with all that they said. I think that Liz should be the winner if I were to choose right now because I really liked her work. I thought that the picture of the women that was a frozen shot that looked like a book cover was really great. I think that in the end, the right people got sent home because their photos weren't all that great matched up to everyone else's. I liked this show. I thought that it was really interesting.
DR i enjoy the concept of the show and how each of the judges were looking for certain things from each of the contestants. the contestants were all very different and had different things to offer which made it interesting. some of the contestants liked to photograph street photography and capture the moment and others like to stage their photos. i liked the first assignment it showed how each of them would go about doing the most simplest and straight forward assignment. all of the contestants went about doing the portraits of their partners in a different way. the photographing of the famous person would have been easier i think if you researched the person before had so that you can create a concept instead of just setting her up as a a normal average person. jay and lucinda did just that which i thought was clever. the street photography that had to do was a bit difficult with the weather and would have made the technical part of the assignment difficult. the rain though added a much different mood to the photos that it would have in the summer with lots of color. for this assignment i enjoyed both the people that got eliminated only for their photos on the street photos. they had nice set ups but the judges were right when they stated carolyn's photo looked like a band photo. on such a dreary day i would have had a person or two in bright colors so that they popped and had a umbrella by the beach. i thought the judges critiques were quite on key. arons photos were too manipulated with adding in the sign and making the photo to complex. ed's photos were too plain and didnt capture enough of the peoples personalities. carolyn did not do a good job on the technical aspect of the photos with just the camera. i believe they eliminated the correct people.. they could have eliminated Aron over jay. i liked jays work even though it was not showing the personalities of the people in them. i enjoy lucinda the best because she is most like me. i like to set up my photos and show the concept that i have in my head.
DR My initial response to the video was that it was just like America's next top Model but with photographers. The photographers being beginners for the most part, the judges being experts on photography and the competition designed to make the photographers better. I think the assignments were appropriate. The approaches of some were good but the lady with the crazy hair and the bald guy didn't quite get the assignments. I would have done the assignments like the guy who got eliminated. I think his photographs were better than most of the others. I think the judges were fair for the most part. They are looking for a photographer who has potential. I think they made a mistake with by eliminating the guy in the first round. I think he showed the most potential. I think the guy who got eliminated in the first round was one of the better photographers and the girl who went to school for photography. I didn't see enough of their work to make a decision on who the best is. The lady with the crazy hair was a good choice for elimination, and I would have picked the bald guy who photoshopped the sign into his photo to be eliminated.
DE I love the idea of this show, and i wish they had a show like this every year in the U.S.A. Their choice of photographers was a little weak in my mind. They said that there were thousands of people putting pictures in to be on the show. There must have been better talent in those applications then what was shown on the show. I loved the idea of the assignments. They pretty much covered the popular areas of photography. For the celebrity subject i would have done it in a creepy, scary way. I love to throw a tiny bit of confusion or fear into my work. I feel like the judges were harsh where it was needed. they pointed out the great things about the work, but they also let people know where they needed improvement. I think Ed was the best in the area of knowledge of photography. He really knew a lot about the equipment, but he lacked content. I think Jay had a great eye for content, so i disagree with the judges for getting rid of Jay. I really would like to see the rest of this show. I love the idea of a photography competition. So i really think we should watch the rest of the episodes in class.
DE I like the idea of having a "reality show" for photographers-it helps to put photography in the mainstream by showing it in a "pop-culture" kind of way (by televising it). Originally, I thought it was great that they included photographers without formal training/experience, but then they used it against Jay and cut him. I feel like they should not have included him in the competition at all if they were just going to cut him for his lack of experience. I thought the responses to the assignments were appropriate, but overall I thought the responses to the beach were weak. The photo of the waiters in a store front didn't portray the beach in any way, nor did the photo of the boys with the silver wall behind them. Those two really stuck out as not portraying the "beach" in any way-the viewer would not have known they were taken there if we hadn't been told. I'm not sure that taking each others photos was a good idea in that they can't portray their subject's personality since the photographer didn't know them. I thought the judges were right on with their critiques-I didn't think it was overly harsh at all. In some instances I felt they could have been more forthcoming in their critique. I think they should have kept Jay-because he has no formal training, I think he had a great viewpoint on what he was photographing. I hope Ed doesn't win-I'm not impresses by him at all. I also didn't like Aron-but I don't like "disturbing" photographs, and I especially did not like the way he manipulated a photograph of a child. I think Liz or the other girl will win. I would like to see the rest of the series, not only to see who wins, but to be exposed to more photography and the "work/meaning" behind making the image.
DE I think this video was really cool, I guess i really like the overall challenge and variety of photographers. Although I've never heard of the judges they seem to really know how to take the situation and see the potential that photographers can achieve. I really think that pairing up photographers with different backgrounds can really be beneficial to each other. I thought the assignments really gave interesting situations for the photographers to shoot in. The most difficult one that I saw was family holiday shot on the rainy beach. It seemed to give the photographers the biggest challenge, and some of them took a difficult situation and simplified it. If I were to shoot at the beach in the rain and needed family shots I would try and get an image of people caught in the rain running for cover and try and take the situations and see how people react in it. I think the judges gave really helpful critiques, although they just kind of commented on the context of the picture I think that at the end of the critique they should give more insight and tips so that they know the area that they need to improve on. Overall the judges critiques were exactly what i pictured them to be, I have been involved in critiques before and these were not nearly as harsh as they were. I think Elizabeth Gordon was the best photographers, because of her tied up shot with the juice box. She took a simple task and made a picture that has humor and can be looked at with different perspectives. I'm glad that in this episode she got to stay cause although she was nervous for some of the shoots, she really showed that she is capable of professional work. As far as the photographers who were eliminated I think that Carolyn can't handle situations on then her own so I agreed with their choice there. I think that Jay should have stayed because he brought something to the table that no one else could, even though he needs more time to grow I think that this show and the challenges could mold him into a really good photographer. I really like this show it gives a good challenge to its photographers. I think that working with other photographers helps too, id really like to have someone else to bounce ideas off of. And it really helps to have someone who needs you as a subject as well so they have to help you get the shot. I've found that finding subjects for shots can be difficult.
DE I liked the show, the idea, and the format of the show it was informative as well as dramatic. The voting off the island theme helped but the for the most part the assignments and how each photographer used their own style. The different backgrounds of the photographers could have been explored a bit more would have helped in knowing how each of them arrived or where choosen. They were appropriate and married well together they were in sync, I would have liked to have them been allowed to use one free style photo to show more of their own background. I thought they were spot on in their critic, not overly harsh but critical and also informative. They did eliminate the correct people, the one using photoshop should have been eliminated just for that reason alone. I believe Ed is the best photographer, the ease at which he can take pictures allows him to explore and be able to move beyond the other photographers, in style and in content.
DE I thought the video was very good and opened my eyes to the different types of photography. I feel the photographers have all different styles and they are good with the styles that they like the most. However, I feel they need to open their eyes to other photography and keep an open mind. The judges were right on when critiquing them and they actually need to be a little more up front I feel. The assignments were good and I feel it really challenged the photographers. I feel when they approached the assignments they either thought about it too much or too little. They needed to keep it simple but make it interesting. With the first assignment I would have found out what that person like or how they felt about something and took a picture that represented who they were. I feel the judges were fair and they sometimes need to be more harsh when it came to critiquing the photographers work. I feel that they needed to be more harsh because one way to get better is to know exactly what you were doing wrong. I feel Lizz was the best photographer so far and feel she should win the competition. I say this because she keep her mind opened and was really willing to try different styles of photography and go out of her comfort zone. I feel the judges eliminated the right people because they were the least skilled and needed more experience to actually have good photos. This video relates to what we are doing in class because it is showing us the different styles that we can try. Also, I think it would be cool to try and do some kind of challenge in class.
DE The video was overall great. The photographers I think had no clue what they were getting themselves into and didn't really over thought the task given to them. As for the judges I think that they were way to nice to these people. I think that the assignment was very appropriate. These photographers should have been able to capture the essence of the person along with their way of taking a photographs. I liked Liz's way of taking pictures the best. She has the ideas there but has a hard time getting them in the picture. Everyone else kinda of took the image and made it their image not about the people they were photography and they really missed really basic things. I didn't like them playing with images in photo shop i think a photo should be as natural as possible and if it would really need work only use it to enhance the photo not make it worse. I think I would have taken a more simple approach yet used something about each person and made that what stands out in the picture. I really think that the judges were very easy on the photographers. I think that if they had a harsher critique it would better help them. I know having a harsh critique helped me. I believe the judges didn't want to crush their hopes and dreams on television was part of the problem. The two male judges spoke more than the gallery director its her gallery I mean you would expect to hear her voice more. I think Liz is the best photographer. Liz is the kind of person who isn't all big headed about the shoots. She takes them as she comes and interprets them in her own way. She seemed to take in the most from the critique . Everyone else just seemed like nothing they said mattered. I got that mostly from facial expressions and Caroline being very upset about the harsh critique she got. I would love to know who one. This is a really good show.
DE I think that this would be a good project for our class. The premies is great for a tv show. The photographers they used were great, just regular people who have not made a name for themselves. The judges from what we saw were not that harsh to me. Over in the states there would have been a lot more harsh statements made toward there work. The photo assignments they were given were nice an easy. I would love to be in this type of project. For the photo of each other, i would not have used props to make the photo. I would have just used their personality. For the famous person i would have captured the essence of them, the person. I would not have made them do something they were uncomfortable with. For the final test with the strangers, this would have worked out great. When Ed took the photo of the three laughing in the bad weather was the best in my eyes. Capturing real life and how they were feeling and the friendship shard amongst them. The three judges seem to be a fit for the show. I think that they might have been to soft on the contestants. I think that in order to find the next big photographer you need to exploit their weaknesses, and give them the harshest critique in order for them to make up for it in the next shoot. The best photographer in my eyes was Aron Brown. I like they way he exploits the real world. I like the fact that he brings light to touchy subject like making Lucinda scrub the side walk. And also with the reason kids dance. The judges said he pushed it to far, i don't think that he pushed it far enough. The only way you are going to get your message out have to push the boundaries of society norms. He does that well. Yes the judges eliminated the two people that took weaker photos. They choose the people that staged their shots poorly.
DE i thought the video was alright. i didnt love it, but i thought it was interesting. i think it was cool to see how the photographers had to go through hard obstacles. i liked the diversity of the photographers, and the different styles they all had in taking photos. i think the judges were too nice, and didnt critic enough. i think they could have giving back more feedback, and more of an incite. i think the assignments the photographers had to do were not good. i didnt really like them. i dont think the assignment where they had to shoot each other was very good. i think there was an element in there where they could have purposely tried to make the other person lose. the other person could of not cooperated the right way, and ruined what the photographer wanted to do. i also didn't like the assignment when they had to photograph a celebrity. i think that someone should only have to practice doing that if thats what their job is. theres so many different types of photography, and its a waste to practice that type, if your never going to photograph celebrities for a living. i liked the beach assignment. i thought that one was very challenging, and interesting. it made the photographers really creative, and made them think about their photos a lot. i thought the judges were to nice. i think they should have giving more of a critic, and been more harsh. they should have giving more tips, or feedback on how the artist could improve. they were very plane with their feedback, and didnt say enough about the photos. they were very single minded towards them, and once they got an idea in their head about the photo, they stuck with it. there was no changing their mind. i think that jay's pictures were very good. i liked his and didnt think he should of gotten voted off. i liked the picture he did of lucinda on the couch on the street. the graffiti on the wall behind her and all the couches was a good idea. i didnt like the assignment, because the photographers didnt know the people, so how are they supposed to grasp a photo about them. i think the photo was strong, and well captured. i think that they were right to get rid of carolyn. i dont think her pictures were strong, or good. i think she tried to hard when trying to photograph the other guy. like putting mud on his face, or putting him with stuffed animals. i think they were right to vote her off. i didnt really think the video was that helpful or that informational. i think we've seen better videos that can help us more.
DE This video was a perfect way to show how to properly take a picture of people by incorporating a piece of that person in the image or making a relationship with that person. The judges did not seem to harsh but very truthful in a sense to show how that photographer could make their image stronger by changing the way they take photos. I think the assignment was appropriate because it really made people come out of their comfort zone to try and make a good image by simple ways and not making it harder then it really can be. By adding a lot of objects or changing the scene the image becomes unreal. Taking photos of each other and of strangers gives the artist a chance to tell a story or make an image have meaning behind it. The judges to me were more truthful then harsh. In a way they were being kind to the artist because they could of been a lot harsher in their critiques by totally hating every aspect of every image. The judges in a way tried to speak their mind and be very vocal about the images to try and the artist instead of shooting them down except for the studio director who was very quiet most of the time. I believe the strongest photographer in this competition that should win is Elizabeth because her images try to incorporate herself in a way and really make the images stronger. All of her images came out really strong and shows that even out of her comfort zone she can still take a really good image by keeping it simple and staying away from the extreme. I believe Ed is a good photographer for wanting to keep the truth in all of his images but always thinking about photography eventually distorts his images in a way. I think the judges were correct about removing Carolyn from the competition because her images were to distorted and extreme but I believe Jay had talent even for just starting out.
DE Premise-6 photographers, 2 get eliminated each week. The winner gets a studio show and book deal. I think Lucinda or Lizz were my favorite, I felt like they are the strongest, they have the most creative minds. I didn't like Carolyn or Aron. Carolyn didn't seem like she was comfortable with the camera or the assignments, I kind liked her shots, but she was the weakest of all of them. Aron had a unique approach, but I didn't like the messages in his photos, too offensive. I believe the judges could have been harsher, I liked what they said, but a lot more aspects could have been mentioned and critiqued. I thought the assignments were fair, not easy, but not difficult. The assignments were had some creative thought behind them. I feel like the photographers were open to a lot more opportunities for nice shots, but didn't take enough advantage of their surroundings. I think the photographers way over thought and tried way too hard to get a good shot. Most of the time the simplest photos can be the best ones. I think Ed did the best in the assignments, simplicity wise, but Lizz was the most artistic and creative with her subjects. If I had the beach assignment I would have played up the rain a little more than the photographers did. I would find people that were both happy and having a good time in the rain, and others who were more miserable and played with the emotions. I think the judges were a little to harsh on Lucinda, but not harsh enough on the rest, especially Carolyn who had to use photoshop to produce an adequate photo. For the most part I agreed with everything they said about each photographer, but more things could have been mentioned. Too nice overall Right now I think Lizz is the strongest, I'll have to see more of the show to really make a good decision. I think Ed and Lucinda are close behind. I'm kinda upset that Jay got voted off so early, because I did like the style of his photos, but I agree with the judges critique of him when they pointed out his picture of Lucinda doesn't portray her at all. I don't know if he grasped the goal of the assignment, but I did like how he shot. I think they should have given him more of a chance because he does have a lot of potential. This isn't the best video I've watched in class, but it was good to see real photographers critiqued by professionals
DE I like the premise of this video especially with this class, I think it was a great thing to see. Understand the pressure of taking photos for a specific cause. The photographers all had a different style that they enjoy doing and I think that there approaches were very different from what I know and understand. The judges were knowledgeable on framing and all the techniques that would make them qualified. All of them have different perspectives so that help them critic all the artist fairly. I think that the assignments were fair except for the vacation spot one. The weather was ruff and the worries that comes with the weather and the effect t will have on the camera. But on the other hand, there was a one person who got a good photo out of that day, so it created a good moment. The approaches to the assignment were positive and I think that if I was there, I would have pictured how someone would feel being in crappy weather. I would of taken the mood of the beach and applied it to a person, or maybe show the opposite emotion as did Ed Thompson. The judges ranged and there was one that witness the action on site, there were other judges who were not there and were able to be objective. I thought that there critics were good. I felt that they were valid and true. There are those who need more experience in technique and then there were those who need to change their content and get a little crazy. I hate when I am forced to change things up a bit but then there are some great photos that occur out of the unusual. I think that is the toughest of accepting critic, someone telling you that your view is a little one tone or dated. I do not think that the judges should have eliminated Jay. I think he had a great eye and I think that maybe they underestimated his potential. I really did like his work, and I connected with him more than Lucinda Chua. I think that Ed and Elizabeth are my top choices for who I feel might win the competition.
DE I thought that this video shows the reality of life and competing to get your artwork and photographs out there and in magazines. Just like they have show for Top Chef to compete to get your own restaurant. The photographers all had different thoughts of what they were going to shoot and what they wanted viewers to get out of their photographs because they all have different views on what they find intriguing and interesting. Everyone having a different frame of mind makes artwork different and creative. The judges I think in some aspects were harsh, but I think it was the reality of their work and they needed to hear the things and critiques of the judges to improve their work and become top photographer. I thought that this was a really an interesting show and I haven't really seen things like this in America for photography of Tv shows. I think that the assignments were very appropriate because a professional photographer should be able to take pictures of people either portraits or candid very well and have worked with this for a while because i feel like taking a photography class one of the first things you learn is how to take portraits of people. I think that their approaches are very creative and even though they didn't have a long time to shoot the photographs they all had very creative ideas of where they were going to take the photographs and what they were going to have their main subject in the photograph do. I found the ways that they took their photographs very inspiring and I want to be that creative with my work from here on out and have a different perspective for viewers rather than something that is simple and straight forward. I want to put thoughts into viewers head. For the people assignment I would have done something that showed their true self whether is was something they love or a hobby and tied the photograph into that. I would have wanted to make the photograph unique, but at the same time be able to show their true personality. I thought that the judges were harsh, but at the same time if everyone always tells you your work is good you're never going to be able to improve. I think they give you opinions of what they thought would have made the photographs better and what would make it stronger. I think it helps them improve their artwork. The judges weren't nasty or rude to anyone even though Carolyn thought that they were being rude about here one photograph i think that the world we live in now you are timed for certain things and aren't given sunny days with no wind and everything is going to be perfect we live in a world were things go wrong and you have to take the downs with the ups. I think the judges were truthful and tried to be positive towards their photographs, not in any ways to offend them or make them feel bad about their photographs. I think that even thought most people don't like Ed I want him to win I think that he has a very creative way of taking photographs and with the famous lady he just wanted to talk to her and get her true expressions about how she feels and the way her life is. I think that his portraits all meet the requirements of the assignments that were asked. I think that the right people were voted off because Jay wasn't really educated as much as all of the others were and this was a competition rather than a learning experience. I think Carolyn also wasn't able to meet all the standards and requirements that they had wanted the contestants to meet. She wasn't able to be creative enough and her photographs were plain and not as interesting as the other photographers. I really like this video it was about photography, but was also a tv show which was interesting because competition shows are now what our society revolves around.
DM I was first apprehensive due to the nature of the show, being a reality show, but I was impressed by the level of seriousness and professionalism presented in the film. The contestants were varied, as well as the judges, and it wasn't over-hyped and over-dramatic. The assignments seemed appropriate. They represented the most common and most viewed type of photography, so it would make sense to judge based on their ability to take a portrait. I'm more partial to the free-form that Carolyn would use, but I do feel a necessity to hone that more as I continue through this class. Its hard for me to comment on how I would do the assignments, much for the same reason. The judges, again, seemed fair and competent. I wish the critiques could have been a bit more in depth, but given that it was a television show, I can understand why a lot needed to be cut out. I have a strong inclination that Ed will probably do the best in the competition due to his experience over the others. However, I am rooting for Aron because I'm partial to the documentary/political message style of his work.
DM I thought it was nice to see the thought process each photographer went through while taking a picture. The judges knew what they were talking about and maybe could have given a few hints as to what they would have liked to see. I think if it was a longer series it would be more successful as well. I think that would be a great show to watch because almost everyone has a camera and is interested in photography I thought the assignments were great! They tested each of the photographers in a way that would be needed later on in any photography career. Your going to run across famous people who try to take over, your going to need to set up photographs to tell the story of a subject, and your going to need to be able to talk to strangers to get the pictures you want. I think with the beach life i would have tried a more natural approach where i just observed subjects on vacation and allowed what they actually did to become the subject of the photo. I thought their critiques were harsh is some areas, but needed. You will never learn unless someone tells you how to fix the problems. I think aron should win the competition. I understand that he has more experiance than the other photographers which gives him an advantage, but he seems to know what he is doing and can take control of the situation he is put into. His photos looked good and his techniques were great.
DM I thought that the show was a pretty interesting show, and I think the premise is something that could be used as a fund raiser of sorts in this department. I like how they got a good mix of photographers for the show, and they are all pretty personable in some way. I think the judges are also pretty solid, and portray their own tastes where they see fit. I think the assignments are pretty straight forward and to the point. I feel that they are largely appropriate, but I don't like some of the methods used for getting some of the beach photos. The guy not telling the family that he was going to photoshop a sign in there was pretty unethical. For that beach shoot, i might of tried to shoot people going out of a store and into the store that was there.
I think the judges are pretty fair and honest. They don't really beat around the bush and give it to the photographers pretty real. I also like how they give a range of judges with different tastes as well. I personally liked Aron's eye for taking interesting images and for making the scenery part of the picture as well. It was a shame that he got booted, as he probably could of done well if the show was longer. I really think we should do a show like this,
DM I felt the video was very entertaining. I enjoyed the challenges and the feed back. I liked the Images that they showed and I like how they showed the artist process. I would like to finish the series and see who comes out the winner. If i had to do the photograph my partner assignment i would of asked to go to the persons house. this is because where else are you going to get the most information on a person how they live and what their character is like.
The judges were well respected in their fields and were confident in there critiques. I found myself agreeing or being persuaded by what they said. so i feel they were a strong choice. I can't remember the girls name but it was the one who liked to make sure everything was perfect and was a photo graduate, i think she should win. i feel the one dude they eliminated could of been replaced by the guy who tried to offend or make you think but in the end as long as the one girl wins its all good
DM I thought the video was relatable. I could see myself in some of the photographers. It was interesting to see that they had some of the same issues with exposure, etc. like the rest of us. I felt like the judges were fair and seemed to know what they were doing. The assignments were interesting. The celebrity photoshoot was interesting to me, because of how they all handled it so differently. I think the only thing I would have differently was not admit to the subject that I had no idea what I was doing, like Aron. Because after that he lost control of the shoot. I thought the judges seemed really fair. They weren't overly harsh, and gave constructive criticism and reasons why they were eliminating those people. I think Elizabeth Gordon, should win the competition. Her portrait of Jermain Greir (sp?) was the most unique. I think Aron Brown should have been elinimated, he didn't seem like he knew what he was doing, and was intimidated by the whole thing.
DM The overall feel of this show was very interesting and I really enjoyed the way that the show was constructed. I enjoyed the situations that they were given and really pertain to the class at the current moment. The show was also very informative i think because you got to see the way the photographers got to shoot there subject. You were also able to somewhat understand tehre though process as they went through the shoots. The assignments that were given were very interesting and i could see them being very helpful to building your experience while taking photographs. The photo shoot with the celebrity, ms. greer was very interesting and makes me think that in a photo shoot that you just have to understand the subject and take the picture that you want to take. The judges critiques seem to be harsh, but at the same time they are telling the truth and what they think about the pictures. Them as established photographers sound as though they were giving tips that would be beneficial contestants that took there picture. all the contestants were great photographers however with the pictures that they took on the show and the ones that have been displayed, I think that Lucinda Chua should win. The picture with The false fireflies was very cool and i enjoyed it alot.
DM My initial response was that this was a pretty cool tame reality show. Unlike other shows that just concentrate on a finished product that judges critique, we as viewers get to see the location and set up of where the photographer chooses to go. I like the variety of contestants that were chosen for the show and how there all have a different method for shooting a good image. I think the assignment for the show was a good one. When given the challenge to shoot people you can really start to see how good a photographer is. All of the approaches were different. I didn't like Lucinda Chua dressing up her subject to portray herself. If I had gotten paired up with another photographer I think I would just ask them a lot of questions to see what type of person they were instead of guessing. When I had their personality pegged I would probably not use any props and just shoot them in whatever way they wanted to go. The judges were all good picks for this kind of show. I think they were nice to teh contestants and when Carolyn complained about the elements I think she deserved to get voted off because as a photographer when you are given an assignment you do the best you can and work with whatever gets thrown your way and you can't complain. The judges did eliminate the right people in my opinion. I liked how Liz Gordon took photos and I would like to see her win.
DM Being an art person I actually find a lot of humor and help from getting your ass handed to you about your own work. I think that to survive in this world you have to hear the harsh stuff sometimes. I enjoy that the photographers come from different walks of life and have very different styles. I think that the varying level of experience among the photographers makes an interesting dynamic. People are difficult to shoot. There is a fine line to control the what you want the shot to be without compromising the subject. I think that some people forced too much in their images. I would love to shot a celebrity, if I was able to I would use a black back drop and use a very German Art Deco style of lighting, utilizing snoots and multiple light sources. I love a harsh critique. When I first learned to critique I was taught to be brutally honest. If your not honest with the artist they can never improve on the bad aspects and cannot grow. Critique to me should be treated as work. The judges shouldn't be nice, an exhibition and a book deal should go to the person who can handle being knocked down a peg or two and learn to adapt and develop to go back up the ladder. I think the first two people who left the show were the appropriate ones to go. I like Elizabeth Gordon, although she is not trained in any way I think that she has strong ideas about her own style and work that allows her to have control over her images. I think that personal style, and strong convictions will help whoever to win this competition. Personally, I love studio photography. I love working with models and having as much control over the composition and lighting as possible.
DM My initial response to this video was it reminded me of other reality television shows/competitions, such as, "America's Next Top Model" and "Project Runway". I made that connection mostly because of the premise of the show and format of "missions" the contestants must go through. I appreciated the eclectic group of contestants the show offered and the variety of background they brought to the table. It felt as though, perhaps they were giving the underdog a chance (though I doubt they were going for that but it "makes good tv"). I was impressed with the assignment of capturing the artists self portrait while not actually using the physical body of the artist, but instead, utilizing a fellow contestant. i thought the first example of that assignment where the photographer used rope to bind her subject to represent her need for control was brilliant. I would like to incorporate that type of simplicity and symbolism in my work. I noticed sometimes I would agree with the judges and sometimes I would not. I understood where they were coming from when they would mention a photograph looked too "romanticized", but other times I would appreciate what I thought was raw and they would see safe. But overall, I acknowledge the success they have had in their field and respect their input. I'm actually unable to match the face and name of the contestants, but I can describe the photographer that I personally think should win. She was the first one to go for the self portrait where I mentioned earlier where she used the rope on her subject. She also used a mug shot/frozen preservation approach for the celebrity photo shoot. I just really admired her creative ideas for her assignment and how she was able to make it work and collaborate with her live subjects.
DM I think it is an interesting concept for a reality show. In some ways I don't like how the show is done, however I like aspects such as how they must shoot their subject, in this case, people, in a variety of ways or challenges. I'm referring to how they had to shoot one of their peers, a famous person, and strangers. Many of the ideas these photographers had and the photo's they presented did not seem very clever or original to me, although I realize that may only relate to a matter of taste, and I am not putting down their abilities. There were only a few I found to be interesting, but even then I don't know how technically successful they were. Regarding the first challenge they had, I would have been a lot more tuned into who the person was I was photographing and play off that, instead of just bringing my initial concept into it right off, like I feel most of these photographers did. I did not always agree with the judges critiques, sometimes I think they criticized a photo for the wrong reasons, or they didn't really give reasons that made much sense. Although At times I did agree with them I think they needed to explain themselves better. I do not know who I feel the best photographer is yet. So far I am not entirely drawn to any of them. I agree with the judges decision to eliminate the woman, I can't remember what her name was. However I'm not sure I agree with their decisions to eliminate that man. I agreed somewhat with what they said about him, however the products of his peer photoshoot and stranger photoshoot were a few of my favorites. My least favorite photographer so far might be the man who kept trying to make controversial statements. I feel like he was trying too hard to be edgy and although that approach might get your interest at first I don't think it is very enlightening.
DM My initial response to the video was how the show was being set up. I was comparing British T.V. with American. I like how they took a array of photographers. Some with no formal experience, some very experienced, some fresh out of school and others who found refuge in photography. The judges were not involved to much. I like how they showed photos from one of the judges. But I wish they gave more input or showed them doing so. The assignments seemed well thought out and geared towards the show. I thought they were challenging and exposed the photographers strengths and weaknesses. With the portrait I would have done a simple shot. Not using background or props but strong lighting and color. With the Greer shoot I would have tried to have her look devastated or angry. Try and draw out some common emotion to tie her in with everyday people. The rain shot I would have tried to capture an image that had a drizzly depressed feel. I would have liked to hear more input from the judges. What they thought worked and didn't. What technical mistakes or successes they made. I just felt like the critiques were cut up and didn't provide much for the viewer. Especially those who may not know a lot about the developmental process of photography. I thought the best photographer was the woman who photographed Greer frozen in time. I also liked the girl who was just out of college. My least favorite was the man who photographed the sign in with the kids dancing. I feel like he tries for that shock factor to hard.
DM My overall impression of the video was good. I liked the idea of the challenge that had to be taken with the photographers. I feel all of the photographers had good approaches to the assignments except for one man that took one of his pictures of the woman cleaning the sidewalk. I do not remember his name but he seemed to not know what he was doing and didn't have any ideas on what he wanted to shoot, nor was he prepared with any props. I do think a couple of the judges were a bit too harsh with the photographer's pictures. I feel that most of the pictures were really good and had a lot of character. I also think it wasn't really fair to the photographers who have never used studio equipment. I think the woman (I don't remember her name) that took the photo of the other photographer tied up on the bench should be the winner of the competition. She went out of her comfort zone and came up with some nice photographs.
